Field Trip Update & Other News

Hello Parents,

I just wanted to let you know that I will be attending a workshop this coming Friday, October 1st. I will be returning to school at 2:30. Also I wanted to let you know that we were able to secure a bus for the October 21st field trip. Thank you to all parents who showed interest in during us. Permission forms will be going home October 15th for the field trip, but I wanted to give parents prior notice in case you are wanting to join us for this awesome experience. I have purchased tickets for the students and 5 adults. I currently have only one parent tickets available. If you are wanting to come please email me as soon as possible. Last years show sold out quickly and we were limited with how many parents we could take. There are some tickets left at this point, and I would love to have as many parents are possible there. So if you're interested please visit http://www.writersfest.bc.ca/2010festival/tickets. Our workshop is #23 Down here, Up there. Please purchase your own tickets and then let me know you're coming!

Thanks,

Miss Wyville (10 days to go!)

Weekly Update: September 27th to October 1st

Hello Grade Three Community,

Things are really moving in grade three! We've established a great flow and rhythm to the day, and I'm very pleased to say that your children are doing well! My goal this year is to help transition them towards independence. In class, I emphasize accountability with regards to their agenda getting signed, filling out their home reading sheets, and being personally responsible for their belongings. The morning routine is that students bring their own backpacks into the classroom where they put their lunches in their locker and bring agendas to their desk. I ask for your assistance in allowing your child to do this independently. In the morning parents are encouraged to say goodbye at the door.

In other news, I'm excited to announce an upcoming field trip. On October 21 we will be attending the Vancouver Reader and Writers Festival. We will be listening to two authors speak about their books, and going on a picnic (weather permitted) afterward. The festival is on Granville Island, and will be from 9-1 pm. Unfortunately, that week all buses are being used, so to make this happen we need parent drivers. Currently, we have five drivers and are in need of three more. Please let me know ASAP if you can accompany us on that day.

Wishing you a great week,

Melissa Wyville

Weekly Update: September 20th to 24th

Hello Grade three community,
What a great full week! This week we started our science unit of Structures, wrote stories about animals, and started book talks in reader's workshop. Megan was the V.I.P for the week and on Monday she will pick the new V.I.P. Yesterday, we had the Terry Fox run, which was a huge success! Thank you to all parents that came to cheer on our runners. In chapel we watched a movie on Terry and his journey, and in class we had numerous discussions about hope, strength, and perseverance. I hope the story of Terry will impact us all to keep going when times get tough, and to live a life of hope.

Home Reading And Terry Fox information

Hello Parents,

Today I've sent home the Home Reading bags with each student. As a way of keeping track of which books students have read, there is a log book inside the Ziplock bag. Please have your child write down the books information after reading it. Please be sure to sign or initial your child's completed book page. Each day, or when a chapter book has been read, student's will bring their bags back to class and record their reading on a school sheet. At the end of the term I will reward those students with 30 books read. Points-wise pictures books are 'worth' one point, while every 25 pages in a chapter book is worth the same amount (one point). I expect students to be reading at least 30 minutes a day at this age. Thank you for your participation in this important program!

On Friday we will be celebrating the life of Terry Fox. During chapel a movie about his life will be shown to the students, along with a discussion of his life in class. The day will end with a Terry Fox run. Students will be encouraged to wear Canadian attire as a way of celebrating this Canadian hero. If you are interested in joining us for either chapel (11:20 to 11:50) or the run (2:00-2:30), please do!

Just a Few Notes

Agendas: Please sign your child’s agenda each day, as all important information will be communicated through it. The planner is also a great way of sending me notes as I check it every morning.

Blog: As an elementary this year we have started to blog. There is a whole elementary blog (www.elementarywrca.blogspot.com), which will then lead you to our class blog (www.grade3wrca.blogspot.com). The blog will have up-to-date information regarding field trips, activities, and the schedule for the current and upcoming week. During second and third term, we will also use our class blog to post stories or poems written by students!

Supplies: I know the beginning of the year is very busy, and so I understand if supplies slowly trickle in. I would appreciate all supplies to be sent to school by Tuesday September 14th. The cost of supplies is $50.00, please make cheques payable to White Rock Christian Academy. Student agendas were $7.00 and is payable to the school as well. Please do not write one cheque (supplies and planner), as the accounting is different.

Summer Memories Object: As a way of telling about their summer, students will be asked to bring in an object that reminds them about their summer or something they made/were given/or purchased. Students will use these objects to write about their summer and orally share a memory with the class.

Food/Water: Students are allowed one water bottle at their desk, which they can drink at any time during the day. I also allow students to snack on vegetables and fruit during the course of the day. Students have been made aware of this and the expectation of behaviour that surrounds such a privilege.

Peanut Allergy: Peanuts and nut-based product cannot be consumed at school. We have an allergy to nuts in our class, and for the respect of the student I would ask that you only pack non-nut food products. Please be aware of this with respect to student birthday treats and other sharing of food.

PE: Physical Education starts this Friday. Please send your child’s clothes in a labeled cloth bag, and be sure to label all pieces of their uniform.

Scholastic: We will be participating in scholastic this coming year. When ordering please ensure that you send a cheque for the full amount, cash will not be accepted.

Spelling: Because the first week is so busy, we won’t start spelling until next week.

Email: My school email is wyvillem@wrca.bc.ca. I will check my email everyday after school and periodically throughout the day.

Today was great, and I’m very excited for this year!

Parent Letter: September 7th

Dear Parents,

After a sunny summer, I welcome you back to school. I wanted to take some time to introduce myself to you and your family. I am so excited and privileged to be part of this exceptional learning community. Before coming to WRCA, I taught in the Langley School District for two years. Throughout my time in Langley I developed a passion for teaching science and Language Arts, and am excited to bring my previous experience to this class.
For the past eight years I have called British Columbia my home. I grew up in Central Ontario, where my family still lives. I came out to BC to attend Trinity Western University, but after my first year living here I fell in love with our province and have been here ever since. What I love most about the Lower Mainland is that in the morning I can go for a hike and by the afternoon be in the city book shopping.
This year I’m excited to be getting married! I spent most of the summer planning, creating, and organizing things so that I’m all ready to have a great September with your kids. The wedding will take place over Thanksgiving weekend. I will be going on a short honeymoon (Tuesday to Thursday) right after the wedding, and a longer one over March Break. My new last will be Kullman.
An important piece of information about myself is that I have quite a few food allergies (All flour and sugars), and so I do not eat any food that I haven’t prepared. I have already informed your children about this, and thank you for your understanding when I decline food. I look forward to getting to know you and your children over these next ten months.

To give you a sense of my daily expectations and routines, I have written a small paragraph on a few keys subjects.

Spelling: Last year as an elementary we began a new spelling program, Sitton Spelling. I am very excited to continue using it this year, as my students last year had great success with it. Every Wednesday students will be pre-tested on five words that will help focus their attention on a set of specific phonetic concepts. Throughout the week we will develop our understanding of these with various class activities and group work. On Monday students will bring home an activity sheet that corresponds to our focus for the week. They are to complete it, and send it back the next day for a completion mark. On Tuesday, students will complete a cloze word test that tests their knowledge of the spelling concept we have been working on. Unlike traditional spelling programs, they are not given a list of spelling words to know for a test. This takes sometime getting used to, but after a few weeks the students very much enjoy the challenge!

Math: We will begin the year by looking at number structures, patterns, and ways of writing numbers. We will have math after recess on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesdays, and will spend a block on Fridays working on problem solving. To help prepare your child for addition and subtraction, it would be beneficial to review their basic math facts (0-10).

Physical Education: I’m excited for the excellent experience your students are going to receive by having Mr. Dykstra as their PE teacher. Physical Education is scheduled for Monday and Friday after recess. Students are expected to bring their gym strip on those days. As a reminder, students will be asked each week to write it in their agendas.

Home Reading: To help facilitate reading at home, students will be signing out books from the class library and recording what they have read in home reading logs. Each child has been given a bag, in which they will keep their reading and log books. My expectation is that pictures books will be returned on a daily basis, and chapter books will be exchanged once student has completed it. If your child reads a book at home, please record it in reading log, as it counts towards their total books read.

Music: As part of the curriculum, your child will be participating in music twice a week. The musically gifted, Mr. MacLeod will be instructing the students every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

Library: Our weekly library time will be Monday after lunch. Students are expected to be responsible for returning library books on a weekly basis. To help keep everyone on track, a reminder will be written in the agenda.

Dismissal: At the close of every day students are required to prepare themselves for the next day by sharpening two pencils, putting away their chairs, and showing me they have their agenda with them. Please be patient at the beginning of the school year, as this routine takes time to master.

Parent contact: I am looking forward to getting to know all the parents throughout the year. Please feel free to visit me after school, once all the students have been dismissed. I welcome your insights into the unique personalities of your children.

I’m so excited for this year. I know that God has brought us all together for a reason. In closing, I want to share with you our classroom theme: Sustainable living as an act of stewardship for God’s creation. This theme will be part of our curriculum, service project, and conversations through the year. I’m excited to see were God leads the class with respect to this year as the year progresses.
My prayer is that throughout this year our classroom community will take an active role in preserving and promoting better sustainable choices.

Thank you for the opportunity to teach your children,

Melissa Wyville [Soon to be Kullman ;)]
