Weekly Update: April 26th-29th

Hello Grade Three Community,

   He has risen! I hope and trust you've had a weekend of reflection and rejuvenation, I know I did. Today I read to the students John 20:11-23, where Jesus makes himself known to Mary and then goes to be with God. This passage really struck me this Easter, and we had some great discussion about it this morning.

   We have a short week, but a busy week ahead of us! We'll be participating in various Earth Week activities. Please make note of two special non-uniform days, and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

   Also the May supervision schedule has been posted in our classroom. If you're available there are still MANY spots available in May. You can sign up in the classroom or office at anytime. Thank you for helping to allow us teachers to have our much needed nutritional break!

1.     Bus/Walk/Carpool/Bike/Horse/Rollerblade/Longboard/Skip to school!

2.     Non-uniform Day – Wear Earth colours – Blue, Green and Brown!

3.     Buddy Chapel – Come for Chapel and watch your son/daughters and their buddies as they worship God through singing and creating giant sidewalk murals celebrating the days of creation.  Chapel time: 10:30 – 11:10

1.     Bus/Walk/Carpool/Bike/Horse/Rollerblade/Longboard/Skip to school!

2.     Worms and Dirt – Bring a cup or small bowl to school  and get a yummy scoop of worms and dirt to eat for 50 cents (proceeds to cover cost of the 2 days)  Lunchtime (hopefully outside on the basketball courts).  Trust me – you will love it!

3.     Face Painting – Participate by receiving a creation image painted on your face at lunchtime (hopefully outside on the basketball courts).

4.     All school garbage collection.  Garbage and recycling bins will be removed from the school as we collect the total sum of our garbage, bottle recycling, composting and paper recycling throughout the day in the foyer.  Check out the foyer at the end of the day to raise our awareness regarding the total amount of trash, recycling and compost we generate in a typical school day.

Weekly Update: April 18-22

Hello Parents,

    Thank you to those who were able to make it out on Friday for our speech contest. Mrs. Hildebrand and I were so impressed, and found it very difficult to pick only three winners! It was great to see how the students took the story, made it their own, and retold it with so much expression and enthusiasm. The three finalists for grade three were: Tamara, Addison, and Cameron. On Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm they will be competing in the finals. If you're  available, it would great to have some grade three present to cheer on their peers.

  Just a reminder that this coming Friday and Monday are non-school days, as we take some time to reflect on the life and death of Jesus. This week our JGB story is the passage from Mark 15-16 which describes the death and resurrection of Christ. Together in class we've been asking questions, making connections, and visualizing this powerful passage. I hope you'll be able to take some time to ask questions yourself and discuss with your child the heart of this passage; that Jesus' death was the ultimate act of love and grace for humankind.

  Lastly, we've had some recent lost clothing items. If you have an extra girl PE shirt at home with Bae written in it, could you please have your child bring it to class. Thanks!

Weekly Update: April 11th-15th

Hello Parents!

  Spring has sprung! On Friday, we spent the afternoon outside observing and drawing the beauty of nature. The student's participated in an art lesson that mimicked Tom Thompson's unique take on art. If you've never seen his paintings, I would encourage you to come into Grade three and check out our art!

  This Friday will be our Grade three Speech Contest. During the afternoon, 1:00-2:15, the students will be presenting their Robert Munch stories to the class. I would encourage you to continue practicing with your child at home (Reminder: this is a RETELLING, not a memorization of the words. Students will be judged on their ability to orally retell these funny stories). We've had limited time in class, and so practicing at home is essential. I've been emphasizing volume, expression and pace while talking to the students about speech contest. I would love to have an audience for the students, so if you're available on Friday from 1:00-2:15 pm please feel free to come and join us; I know you'll be thoroughly entertained!

  I also wanted to ask for your assistance. We, in Elementary, have seen a decline in Elementary Supervision volunteers. I feel guilty asking for assistance, as it greatly benefits us teachers when we have volunteers to cover the supervision of students at lunch time. What we're looking for are parents who are able to come from 12:00-12:45 to watch over the students as they play. On the days we don't have enough, us teachers must give up our lunch eating time, which makes for a long day. If you are able to fulfill a lunch supervision time, please sign up in the office for the month of April or contact Tanya Friter in Learning Resource (Tuesday & Wednesday only).

Weekly Update: April 4-8

Hello and Welcome back!

  I hope and trust that you had a great Spring Break. From the stories, it seems that you kept your kids busy with activities, travelling, and visiting with friends. Geoff and I traveled to Hawaii, and had a wonderful vacation in the sun.

   I wanted to take some time to tell you about few activities going on this term; some will need parent assistance, while others will be done in class, but I wanted to make you aware of them. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Speech Contest: 
  At the term two parent meeting I outlined the Speech Contest (students would memorize a poem), but after a moment of epiphany, I slightly altered the Grade 3 speech contest outline. Instead of a poem, students have chosen a Robert Munch story to retell. I do not expect the story to be memorized word for word, but rather they will be graded on the retelling of the story (beginning, middle and end), expression, voice, and movement. When I was in grade four we did this with fairy tales, and, as I remember it, the result was awesome! Students will be bring home a duo-tang with their story, a parent letter, and an assessment rubric so they can practice with you at home. I will be giving them limited time in class, so it is essential for them to practice at home. On April 15th students will be participating in an in-class speech contest. Mrs. Hildebrand and I will be grading each student, and the top three will be moving on to the next level of competition (April 20th). Good luck and have fun!
